Second Circular of 2025 SHINE Forum
Dear all,
We are delighted to invite you to the SHINE Forum 2025, taking place on July 17–18 at ShanghaiTech University in Shanghai, China.
The SHINE (Shanghai HIgh repetitioN rate XFEL and Extreme light facility), which is a high rep-rate XFEL facility including an 8 GeV CW superconducting RF Linac, 2 undulator lines, soft- and hard- X-ray beamlines and 6 experimental stations, together with a 50-100 PW Ultra-Intense Ultra-Short laser, will be one of the most advanced user facilities that can deliver femtosecond X-ray pulses with up to a million pulses per second.
The civil construction started in April of 2018. The injector was commissioned last year with 100 MeV electron beam and major design specifications had been achieved. More than 20 cryomodules are developed or under development and will be ready for beam commissioning by the end of 2025. FEL-II Beamline and endstation branch installation is underway. The first light to the first end-station is scheduled at early 2026. The world first 100 PW-class laser facility is under construction, and the experimental chamber for the colliding of ultra-intense laser and XFEL has been installed.
The SHINE Forum is an annual platform to discuss advances and challenges in FEL science and technology, foster international collaboration, and prepare for first user experiments. The 2025 forum will include 12 plenary lectures from leading experts at major FEL and light source facilities, and five breakout sessions on scientific applications of XFEL and technologies respectively.
We look forward to welcoming you in Shanghai for this exciting and forward-looking event.
Sincerely
Host organization: ShanghaiTech University, SHINE Project
Co-organizer: Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, CAS, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, CAS, Accounts of Materials Research
Forum Agenda
July 17th Plenary Session
Venue: Main auditorium of ShanghaiTech University conference center
July 18th Breakout Session I
Accelerator Technologies Session
Venue: Room 103 of Teaching Center
Goal: This session will serve as a platform for discussing recent advances and key challenges in high rep-rate accelerator technology, stimulating new ideas, and fostering future collaborations. The session will feature invited talks of experts from major FEL and light source around the world. Topics will span a broad range of accelerator-related research and development, including SRF, superconducting undulator, 4th generation light sources, new spallation sources, particle factories, and novel acceleration principles, etc.
July 18th Breakout Session II
Beamline and Laser Technologies Session
Venue: Room 301 of Teaching Center
Goal: This session aims to provide a platform for discussing key topics, including beamline installation, photon diagnostics, and commissioning, with a particular focus on addressing the challenges posed by the high repetition rate FEL. Additionally, the session will cover discussions on the laser system, synchronization, and timing requirements for time-resolved experiments.
July 18th Breakout Session III
FEL Science and Applications Session
Venue: Room 302 of Teaching Center
Goal: FEL Science and applications Session aims to invite experimentalists and theorists from the FEL and ultrafast community together with experts from diverse scientific background to discuss grand challenges in science, exchange ideas, and evaluate potential experiments at SHINE facility, particularly at FEL-II. Atomic and Molecular Science (AMO), Spectrometer for Electronic Structure (SES) and Soft X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy (SSS) will be the first three endstations at FEL-II available at SHINE. Ultrafast soft X-rays pulses with repetition rate up to 1MHz and photon energies (200 eV to 3000 eV) from FEL-II will provide powerful tools to investigate ultrafast electron relaxation and nuclear motion at the quantum level. Sophisticated and advanced technologies at AMO, SES and SSS endstations enable scientists, from physics, chemistry, energy science etc., to visualize various complex electron dynamics in the attosecond/femtosecond time and atomic level.
July 18th Breakout Session IV
Station of Extreme Light Session
Venue: Room 303 of Teaching Center
Goal: By coupling the world-leading 100PW-class ultra-intense laser with XFEL beams, Station of Extreme Light (SEL) at SHINE facility can provide possibilities of making new scientific discoveries, such as cutting-edge researches on strong field QED physics and high energy density science, powered by the unprecedented capability first in the world. The session will focus on several topics, such as technologies for ultra-intense ultra-short lasers and high repetition-rate intense lasers, theories/experiments/ diagnostics of ultra-intense laser-matter interactions, technologies and method for intense laser based XFEL experimental stations.
July 18th Breakout Session V
Data and Detector Technologies Session
Venue: Room 304 of Teaching Center
Goal: This session is dedicated to exploring the latest advancements in detector systems, as well as innovative big data and AI technologies, at XFEL facilities. With the rapid development of high-frame-rate, large-area pixel detectors, there is an increasing demand for accurate calibration across the full dynamic range, seamless integration with data acquisition systems, and reliable operation under extreme conditions. Furthermore, the massive volumes of complex scientific data generated by XFELs, together with their sophisticated control systems, necessitate the use of advanced algorithms for efficient data handling, real-time processing, and analysis. The integration of AI into facility operation, optimization, and data analysis has become a key focus area in modern photon science. The session will cover the following topics: detector applications, data acquisition, AI & machine learning, operational experience and technical challenges.
